Chapter 32
Chapter 32:
Moreover, it seemed Madisyn had a short temper!
“Since she came back from the countryside, I don’t think she holds a candle to you,” one of Kristine’s friends commented with a scowl. “She’s got no talent and a poor attitude. Kristine, you have a terrible sister. You’re talented in almost everything, and she knows nothing. The future of the Johns family still rests on your shoulders. How self-centered of her to vie for your parents’ affection.”
Most of Kristine’s friends shared the same opinion. They couldn’t imagine that a woman raised in the countryside could match Kristine’s refinement.
“Please, don’t say things like that. My sister is wonderful,” Kristine interjected, although her discomfort was clear.
“Kristine, is she giving you trouble?” one of her friends asked, looking concerned.
“Not at all,” Kristine replied quickly. “That’s absurd.”
Despite her denial, the rumor that Madisyn was an unsophisticated “country girl” spread rapidly, casting her in a less-than-flattering light. Many believed that the future of the Johns family was still securely in Kristine’s hands. After all, the family had been fortunate to adopt her.
Kristine maintained her humble and polite demeanor, while inside, she was filled with pride. In her mind, there was no contest between her and Madisyn. She believed that just a comparison of manners and upbringing was enough to make her the clear favorite in the family.
At last, the banquet commenced.
Glenn stepped onto the stage to deliver his speech, expressing his gratitude for everyone’s attendance before getting to the main point.
“Everyone, thank you for joining us at my daughter’s welcome banquet. After so many years, my daughter has finally returned. Now, let’s have my dear daughter Madisyn come up and greet everyone!”
All eyes turned expectantly to the stage.
Under the bright lights, a figure slowly emerged. Dressed in a breathtaking champagne-colored gown, Madisyn looked like a goddess descending from the heavens. Her beauty was beyond words, and she radiated a regal presence.
Her face, perfectly accentuated by the expert touch of makeup, showcased delicate yet sophisticated features. Her demeanor was one of pride and elegance. In that moment, she outshone everyone else in the room.
For a brief second, the entire banquet hall fell silent.
Then, someone broke the hush.
“My God, is that the real Miss Johns? She’s stunning!”
“She’s absolutely gorgeous! She definitely inherited the best genes from her parents.”
“Who said she was from the countryside? Look at her! Her elegance is undeniable, no matter where she was raised.”
The room, once brimming with gossip and assumptions, was now captivated by Madisyn’s appearance. Those who had been ready to mock her were immediately disarmed by her undeniable charm.
Kristine’s friends, who had been bracing for a laugh at Madisyn’s expense, now looked foolish. They had expected a country girl, but what they saw was a woman of grace and refinement.
Kristine, who had been the center of attention only moments before, now felt herself fading into the background. Her gaze locked onto Madisyn’s dress, much more elaborate and elegant than her own. Where had she gotten such an exquisite gown? Surely, their parents hadn’t provided it.
Kristine’s grip tightened on the hem of her dress, her fingers trembling as the crowd shifted their focus away from her and toward Madisyn.
After Glenn introduced her, Madisyn stepped up to the stage and addressed the audience. Her voice was clear and melodious, each word carefully chosen. “Thank you all for coming today. I am Madisyn Johns, and it is a joy to be back home…”noveldrama
As she stood under the spotlight, a divine glow seemed to surround her, accentuating her beauty and elegance.
Kristine looked on, her face growing pale as she realized how effortlessly Madisyn was commanding the room. The crowd was no longer whispering about her background—they were in awe of her poise and beauty.
Following her speech, many attendees rushed to meet Madisyn, with Glenn proudly introducing her to each one. Despite the many interactions, Madisyn maintained her composed and flawless demeanor, answering questions with ease.
“Mr. Johns, your daughter is truly remarkable—so stunning and eloquent!”
“Truly, excellent genes cannot be hidden, no matter the circumstances.”
“Like father, like daughter!”
Madisyn remained the center of attention, and Kristine could do nothing but watch from the sidelines. Her friends, seeing her disheartened expression, tried to console her.
“Kristine, your sister is really good at putting on a show. Wearing such an expensive dress, she must have intended to outshine everyone right from the start! But look, none of your brothers are here. It seems they aren’t too concerned about her!”
“They’re just tied up with other things,” Kristine muttered, though her spirits lifted slightly at the mention of her brothers. The future of the family still rested with them, and surely, they would prefer a sister who was intelligent and impressive, rather than one who had been raised in the countryside.
As she entertained these thoughts, Kristine raised her head, only to notice someone approaching.
“Is that… Dane?”
“Wow, he looks incredible!” someone whispered.
Dane, dressed in a tailored dark blue suit, exuded an air of mature elegance. His soft smile added to his charm, making him even more captivating.
His appearance immediately drew the attention of the room.
Kristine was stunned. Wasn’t Dane supposed to be overseas on a crucial business trip? Why was he here?
“Kristine, look, your eldest brother has returned! And he’s carrying a gift—could that be a Pauillac bracelet? I heard it’s the only one in the world.”
“Maybe it’s for you,” someone said excitedly.
