Chapter 157
From the day Charlie was born, Evelyn had been the one to care for her with her own hands. When she looked after Charlie, wearing jewelry was just not practical. She got used to it. Even after Charlie was gone, that habit stayed. The only thing she'd put on was a simple watch. It wasn't anything fancy, but she also slipped that watch under her shirt cuff. She handed over everything she could offer. Yet, she could still feel the man's eyes sizing her up.
Evelyn spoke sincerely, "I really don't have anything else." From the beginning, she was nothing but cooperative. Seeing her empty-handed, the man stuffed everything into his bag. Just as he was about to mount his motorcycle and take off, his eyes caught sight of a necklace around Evelyn's neck. His face darkened instantly. He slung the bag over the front of the bike and charged towards Evelyn, his look threatening. "You think you can fool me, bitch?"
He was right in front of her now, gripping her shoulder with a hefty hand. This burly guy's grip was so fierce that Evelyn thought her shoulder blade might snap. Her face twisted in agony. She couldn't figure out why he flipped like that. She swallowed her fear. "I swear, you have all the valuable stuff. I really don't have anything else left..."
Before she could finish, he let go and slapped her hard. The guy was strong because of his labor job, and Evelyn staggered backward from the force, barely keeping her balance. Half her face went numb, and her ears were ringing. Before she could get her bearings, his rough hand yanked at her collar.
Evelyn's eyes widened in shock,
instinctively trying to fend him off. Her defiance only riled him up more. He landed another slap. This time she hit the ground, and he started tugging at the necklace around her neck, cursing all the while. "You dare say you've got nothing, then what's this?"
"Don't!" Evelyn's demeanor changed instantly. She had been cooperative until now, but her emotions surged as he went for the necklace. Drawing on strength she didn't know she had, Evelyn pried his hand away and seized the necklace back, her

This act only made the man angrier. He was convinced now that the necklace was worth a fortune. She gave everything up so easily, but what about this necklace? She guarded it fiercely. He kicked Evelyn. "You're just asking for trouble."
Evelyn hit the pavement hard, her
head throbbing from the impact. A wave of dizziness took over. That kick wasn't gentle. She felt like her insides had been jumbled. But she still clung to the necklace, eyes red as she pleaded, "I'm not lying to you. My daughter passed away, and this necklace has her ashes. 4t's all I have to remember her by. You can't sell it for much, I swear!"
But he didn't buy it. He had three daughters himself, and daughters were just a burden to him and his wife. Who would treasure something viewed as a loss? Why would she keep her daughter's ashes as a keepsake? He wasn't buying it. "Give me the necklace!" He lunged to grab it again. "Don't!" To Evelyn, this necklace was all she had left of Charlie. There was no way she could let Charlie go. Her resistance only fueled the man's anger more.
