The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 166

At Greenrose, when Charles said he's going downstairs all of a sudden, she immediately sensed something was off. Sure enough, he suddenly drove away without a word.

She tried calling him, only to get a curt, "I'm busy, get some rest," before he hung up. He did not even give her a chance to respond. When she called again, there was nothing but silence on the other end.

Ever since Dahlia showed up with his pendant, she had become the one Charles cherished most. He had always placed her at the top of his list, showering her with unreserved attention and care. Charles was so typically aloof and detached, yet he treated Dahlia like a precious gem because of that childhood promise.

Whenever Dahlia called, he'd pick up immediately, no matter where he was or what time it was. But lately, things had changed he wasn't answering her calls as promptly. Today was the worst; he outright ignored her.

Dahlia didn't want to face the truth and always found excuses for Charles, but seeing everything unfold before her eyes, there was no denying it. Charles had left her for Evelyn.

Not only did he leave her, but he also lavished Evelyn with the kind of tenderness that should have been hers alone. That tenderness was meant for her.

Evelyn!

Dahlia clenched her fists, a storm brewing in her eyes as she glared at Evelyn lying in the hospital bed. She couldn't believe how well Evelyn was playing the victim now. Charles was hers. There was no way she would let Evelyn take him away. When a nurse came to check the room, Dahlia was afraid that Charles might catch her following him and ruin the flawless image she had built in his mind, and decided it was best not to linger any longer and slipped away.

That night, Dahlia tossed and turned, sleep eluding her. Every time she closed her eyes, she would see how Charles looked at Evelyn. She couldn't wait any longer.

In the hospital room, Charles patiently soothed away all the bruises on Evelyn's body before helping her get dressed again. He then headed to the bathroom for a quick wash.

Only when he came out did he

realize he had forgotten to draw the

curtains. He locked the hospital room door and pulled the curtains closed for privacy. Instead of leaving or heading to the rest area, he slid under the covers next to Evelyn.

With a gentle pull, he held her close to his chest. Under the influence of medication, Evelyn lay quietly in Charles' arms. He gazed down at her for a moment before dimming the lights. He adjusted her into a more comfortable position, closed his eyes, and they drifted off together.

As night turned to day, Charles' internal clock woke him up right on schedule. Evelyn was still in deep slumber, the medication's effects lingering.

During their five years together, a misunderstanding that Evelyn had drugged him tore him and her apart. He resented her for her tricks, but that night left him yearning for her touch.

Every time Evelyn called him back to Oakwood Manor, he knew she was using her allure to keep him there, yet he found himself unable to resist. Despite the disdain he felt, his body was drawn to her.

Now that he knew she wasn't the one who drugged him, Charles held Evelyn close, reluctant to let her go.noveldrama

Time seemed to slow as the morning light streamed through the window, casting a gentle glow in the room. Charles' gaze rested on Evelyn's lips, which had regained their color overnight. His thumb traced them softly.

Evelyn's lips parted slightly. Her

gentle breaths brushed against his

palm, sending a ticklish sensation through him and stirring his emotions. A restlessness bubbled within him. Charles' Adam's apple moved, and his eyes darkened as he struggled to contain himself. His fingers traced down to Evelyn's jawline, lingering there softly.
