The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 152

The call connected instantly, and Brooks' smooth voice filled Evelyn's ear. "Evelyn."

"Hey Brooks, could you maybe..." Evelyn cut straight to the chase as soon as the call connected. She was about to ask him to come pick her up when a large hand suddenly snatched her phone away. "Charles!" she exclaimed, realizing too late that Charles had already ended the call.

Her face turned stormy as she reached out to reclaim her phone, but Charles just held it higher. With nearly eight inches of height difference, Evelyn couldn't reach it even on her tiptoes.

Frustrated, she kicked out with her high heel, catching Charles right in the shin. She's fueled by anger, and didn't even hold back.

Charles winced, sucking in a sharp breath. "Evelyn, are you trying to murder your own man?" he said with a dry tone, his eyes locked onto her fiery expression.

"Pfft!" Evelyn scoffed, rolling her eyes. After five years of being with him, he had the nerve to call himself her man now. What a joke.

Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, Evelyn lunged for her phone again. She was almost there, but Charles pulled back just in time, causing the phone to slip from her grasp and land in a nearby puddle. Just as Brooks called back, the phone vibrated a few times before sinking into the water, its screen fading to black.

Evelyn fished it out, but it was dead. Frustrated, she hurled it at Charles and turned on her heel, determined not to get back in his car. Her high heels clicked sharply on the pavement as she stormed off.

"Evelyn!" Charles called, reaching out to stop her.

She shook him off, taking big strides in her heels. Then she lost her balance in the tussle and fell to the ground.noveldrama

Charles glanced at the caller ID- it was Dahlia. He ignored it, and his focus was on Evelyn. Despite her earlier harsh words, he took a moment to calm himself, lighting a cigarette to cool his temper.

After ending Dahlia's call, he extended a hand to Evelyn, but she slapped it away, determined to get up on her own.
