The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 151

When Charles mentioned compensation, Evelyn's thoughts immediately turned to her daughter, who had tragically fallen victim to Dahlia's actions. Her eyes began to glisten with unshed tears, a mist of sorrow clouding her vision. She bit her lip hard, trying to stifle the deep pain that threatened to overwhelm her. Charlie had been eagerly waiting for this moment, but now, it was too late. Charles' gesture meant nothing anymore.

With a sarcastic edge in her voice, Evelyn retorted, "Make it up? Charles, what can you possibly offer that would make things right?"

Charles knew her harshness was rooted in the years of grievances she'd endured because of him. She was caught up in their past conflict, and he tried to placate her. "What do you and Charlie want? Just name it, and I'll make it happen," he offered, knowing full well he couldn't promise marriage.

Evelyn was always understanding, aware that Charles had been committed to Dahlia ever since she saved him as a child. His promise of marriage had always been to Dahlia. "Would you offer me Dahlia's life too?" Evelyn's words cut like ice, her stare unwavering. Charles' expression turned frosty as he faced Evelyn, who seemed dead serious in her demand.

"Evelyn!" Charles exploded, his anger spilling over. The mishap from five years ago wasn't Dahlia's fault. He had done Evelyn and Charlie wrong and was trying to make amends. He was willing to meet their needs as long as it wasn't outrageous, but Evelyn's demand was beyond the pale.

"If you can't do that, stop mentioning compensation for me and Charlie. Apart from Dahlia's life, Charlie needs nothing!" Evelyn clutched her chest where her love for Charlie lay, and her smile was tinged with bitterness.noveldrama

"So, you can't bear Dahlia and her daughter, can you?" Charles genuinely wanted to make things right after realizing his past mistake with Evelyn, but Evelyn was pushing the limits.

"Yes!" she declared, her eyes brimming with undisguised loathing for Dahlia. She wished Dahlia could go to hell. Charles' anger simmered, his patience wearing thin.

Desperate to avoid further

confrontation, Evelyn grabbed her bag, unlocked the car, and stepped out. She couldn't stand being near Charles any longer. He didn't stop her, his eyes cold as she exited. They were far from the city With hardly any cars passing by at this hour.

Charles wondered how she planned to make it back to the city. He reached for a cigarette from the glove compartment, lit it, and leaned against the window, watching her through the smoke. Evelyn ignored his stare, pulling out her phone to haifa ride. But they were too far from town, and it was late, making it nearly impossible to find a driver.

As she waited, she could feel Charles' mocking gaze. He thought she was being ungrateful, turning down his offer of compensation.

needed a different plan. She then thought of Brooks. Deciding between bothering him and getting back in Charles' car, she chose to call Brooks. She dialed his number and waited for him to pick up.
